Ridgwell Cullum (pseudonym of Sidney Groves Burghard) (13 August 1867 – 3 November 1943) was a British writer who wrote a large number of adventure novels over more than 30 years, usually set in sparsely populated regions of the USA or Canada. He left home aged 17 to join a gold rush in the Transvaal in South Africa, where he became involved in the conflict between British and Boer settlers; he travelled to the scene of another gold rush in Yukon in north-west Canada; he spent a few years cattle-ranching in Montana, USA. His first novel The Devil's Keg, set in Alberta, Canada, was published in 1903. After its success he settled in Britain and became a full-time writer. Several of his novels were made into films.
The Watchers of the Plains Ridgwell Cullum 9781522933045 Books
This fictional book depicts the time on the plains after the Sioux and Cheyenne had been confined to reservations in the North Mid-West. Settlers had moved into the area near the reservations and the occasional up rising stemming from the life that the tribes were forced to live brought the settlers and Native Americans into physical conflict. This is a well written book that reflects the nature of the USA at that time in history. The writing is considered quite bigoted and racist by the way that we think today. However, I believe that the book reflects the thoughts and feelings of both the Native Americans and the European Settlers at the time depicted and needs to be read from that perspective. Don't judge the author by the nature of the characters of the time. They are accurately depicted in this historical novel

The Watchers of the Plains Ridgwell Cullum 9781522933045 Books Reviews
While the action is in the reading, it is pretty slow reading and not one which keeps one very involved with the story. The story line does not remain faithful to the plains it purports to be about.
The rating is for plot, characters, and ability to hold your interest . The author has verbal skills to describe scenarios that you can see.
This is an unusual story..Very slow at times.but overall very good reading..I certainly am no expert.on books..but I recommend it.
This is a very well written book and is easy to read and follow the story line. It also has a very believable plot line and could easily be pictured as being a true story. The author has a nice way of writing and a great choice of word usage.
I would give it a definite 4 star rating.
Moderately good read, rather wordy emotive, with detailed mental examinations to the lack of physical detail except for the characters. Never encountered broncos spelled bronchos , or chaps with an extra p before.
What a good story. Well written and fast moving with great characters. I will give you a tasting Indian life and their struggles as well as the life of a plains family. The life and death struggles of the time is made very clear a/ d you will feel the fire, death, and the simple satisfaction of that life in the plains.
Reading this story reminded me of old time movies from the 1920s. A check of the author's background showed that he had lived in the era of the story. I believe the story properly describes the time , location, and actions of the people he describes.
